Ten years on and Team Milo are still taking on
challenges both here and abroad as well as trying
to raise funds for other worthy causes. To date the
amount we have donated is in excess of £100,000 for
a variety of charities such as the The Children’s Trust
Tadworth, The British Heart Foundation and Lynn’s
Bowel Cancer Campaign.
December 2015 marked two poignant events for
Team Milo. Not only was it the 10th anniversary of
Milo’s death but it was Antony’s (Milo’s Dad) 50th
birthday and so in his wisdom he decided he wanted
to take on our biggest challenge of all – to complete
one event for every year he is old – “50 Challenges in
a year for charity”.
Antony has always been the driving force behind
the challenges. Not only does he have an unlimited
amount of determination & dedication with each
challenge he takes on, but a need to make Milo
proud. At times he has felt like giving up especially
when things get really tough but for him this could
never be an option. When Milo was 3yrs old he
painted a picture called “Daddy” at school – now
Team Milo’s logo – which Antony has tattooed on the
back of his leg & when he does have to dig deep and
find that extra push Antony always looks at it and it
spurs him on.
So this year Team Milo started the arduous task of
completing 50 challenges & raising money for charity.
We picked 4 causes which we were close to our
hearts – The Lily Foundation, Young Epilepsy, The
Queen Elizabeth Foundation, The Tuberous Sclerosis
Association – all charities which help children or
young adults.
It all kicked off with “Judgement Day goes Nuts”
challenge and it has been pretty full on ever since
with on average, one challenge every week.
As of mid-July we have managed to clock up an
exhausting 38 of the planned 50 so we’re well on
track!!!
The toughest race so far this year has to be the “Rat
Race Dirty Weekend Double Mucker”. This one took
endurance and mental focus to a completely new
level. A 40 mile/400 obstacle OCR! “I was fortunate
enough to have incredible support from my wife
Natalie and after a large sponsor from my friend
Martin Bullock I felt I couldn’t let either of them
down. Their belief and support helped me to dig
deep and keep going even at times when I felt like
stopping. The crowds and the other runners were
amazing, shouting and cheering encouragement
and giving support all along the way. It was such an
awesome experience and fun race, one which I shall
never forget. The emotion as I came to the finish at
mile 40 having been out there running, swimming,
jumping, climbing and crawling for 9 and a half
hours was incredible. I was somewhat overwhelmed
when I finally crossed that finish line. I hope I did my
supporters but more importantly Milo, proud”.
Other challenges planned for the year include
various OCRs, runs, triathlons, bike races & “Man
V Mountain” which involves running up Mount
Snowdon and down again! We would love for anyone
to join us on any challenge as although Antony does
each & every one of them he has on a few occasions
had company, with friends & family battling on with
him.
Team Milo is literally just that – a team- with a variety
of people each playing an important role. The less
strenuous side is the job of Natalie (Antony’s wife) &
Milo’s sister Olivia. Over the years we have contacted
countless companies & personalities & despite often
being rejected, we have been fortunate to have some
support and donations from companies both large
and small of which we are forever grateful.
So far this year Team Milo has raised around £4000
which is absolutely fantastic but we’d love to raise
more. If you’d like to support us, why not visit our
Virgin Money page to sponsor us. Your support will
spur us on and make what we are doing so much
more worthwhile. We’re very grateful for your support.
If you see us on course, come and say hi. If we’re
struggling, it’ll give us that little boost to keep us
going. Why not run with us sometime and do your
good deed for the day. It’s an amazing feeling to give.
Thank you. Antony Gray, Team Milo.
