HEALTH : 0 2 ...and breathe The air we breathe 1 Quite simply put, we all need it. It is vital for respiration. Respiration happens all the time for all living things and without it, we will die. 2 It’s good for the brain. When you breathe in “Fresh air” yes, that means getting OUTSIDE, your brain functions more efficiently when you breathe in more oxygen, it improves concentration and you are able to focus more. 3 It’s good for your lungs. Not only does it feel good deep breathing in waves of lovely fresh air but it actually has a beneficial effect on your lungs too, it helps the airways open up more and improves the cleansing actions on your lungs. (Have you ever googled healthy lungs and compared them to unhealthy ones? Do it now, not if you’re having lunch though.) 4 It’s good for the environment. Yes, it really is. The more we get up and get active, the less we’re using the car! 5 It boosts your immune system. Being more active outdoors boosts your healthy white blood cells. WBC’s supply your immune system with oxygen which our bodies need to fight off bacteria, germs and viruses. Even in the middle of a cold, it’s advisable to get out of the house and go enjoy what is around you with every step you take. 6 It’s good for your heart. Being outside not only helps with your blood pressure but it’s increasing your overall heart health. You don’t have to be running a sub 1:30 half marathon to have a healthy heart so don’t think you have to push yourself until your gasping for air, just getting out and walking is enough. 7 This is the big bonus for me. Let’s talk screen time. Communications regulator Ofcom said ‘UK adults spend an average of 8 hours 41 mins on media devices each day. This means you spend more time staring at screens than you do asleep! Almost 4 hours a day is spent watching TV, that’s adults AND children. Did you know the average 6 year old has the same level of knowledge as the average 45-year- old when it comes to understanding technology devices.’ That’s a pretty shocking statistic. So, get up, get out and reduce that screen time. There are literally no negative reasons to not getting outside and enjoy breathing in some glorious fresh air. Where better to take advantage of all of these reasons than going around an Obstacle Course? Even better, do it with friends, it’s good for the heart and soul. Laughter afterall, is the best medicine. It’s readily available all of the time and it’s really important, but do we really appreciate it? obstaclemudrunner.co.uk ForEliteAtheletes toFunRunners 36 Tip: If you can’t get out as often as you’d like, make sure your office or home is well ventilated. If you’re constantly breathing in stale air any airborne viruses will spread around your colleagues/family quicker than Jonathan Albon can run the World Championships! Here are 7 reasons to get up and get outside
